Alumni Sunday - Sunday, September 29th

After the very successful first annual Summit Alumni Sunday last September we are planning the second gathering on Sunday, September 29th at Summit.  Whether you were a part of Summit, the Wesley Foundation, Indianola or University Churches, this will be a day to celebrate the past and future of this community of faith in The Ohio State University area.  This event will be a time of worship, singing, fellowship, eating and re-acquainting with this special place.

The building at 82 East 16th Ave. has a long history of being a place where students are actively engaging their faith.  From the roots of the Wesley Foundation to the work of campus ministry today, we are excited to lift up and celebrate the crucial work with students.  A part of our celebration will be devoted to celebrating the 100th anniversary of Wesley Foundations across the country!

In addition, each year we plan to honor some people who have been a part of the history of Summit.  This year's gathering will honor two very special people who brought their ministries and talents to this community.  Rev. John Keeny and Rev. Louis Buckalew served Summit at the beginning of Summit's location in the current building.  They brought together diverse people and programs to work in myriad ways in worship, service and outreach to the student community.

One of the projects that John and Lou helped facilitate was the transformation of the Centrum.  The new Centrum was an exciting and beautiful space in which to move forward in new ways.  The architecture was carefully thought out in hopes that the powerful symbolism and flexible space would speak to people for decades to come.  This year marks the 30th anniversary of the move into this space and we will celebrate how the space continues to speak to people who worship here today.   We will also be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the installation of the beautiful red Reiger organ and what it has meant to the musical life of this congregation.  There will be stories about the behind the scenes work of having this instrument built, installed and utilized in the continuing music program of Summit.

The Schedule for Sunday, September 29th will be:

9:15 a.m.  Choir Rehearsal - come and join us! Returning Choir members are welcome.

10;30 A.M.  Worship - Current Pastor, Rev. April Blaine and Rev. John Keeny will be offering words of remembrance and looking ahead!

11:45 a.m. Lunch Provided

12:30 p.m. Looking Back - Be prepared to share some of your memories and stories.

We look forward to welcoming you back to a place we all love and remember as special in our faith journey.

For the 3rd year in a row, Summit on 16th will take a Sunday away to be on RETREAT together!

What will we be doing?

During our first all church retreat in 2011, we spent time creating our path as a congregation for the next few years.  The end product was a new mission and vision statement.  In 2012, we continued on the path by strengthening our relationships with one another and with God.  This year, we will be challenging one another to think about what it means for us to be growing as disciples of Jesus.  We will be using Matthew 5:13-15 as our guide, “We are the Salt of the Earth… and the Light of the World.”

Who should come?

EVERYONE who is a part of the Summit community!  That includes people who worship here on Sunday morning, members of the congregation, recent visitors, people who attend a small group, or people who spend time here in the Summit building for other reasons than worship!

Who will be leading the retreat?

Pastor April will help facilitate our conversations as a large group and then our staff and leadership team will be sitting at the various tables to continue guiding conversations.

Why are we going offsite?

Many churches have an annual tradition of stepping away from their usual routine to pray, worship, and dream about what God has in store for them. A different location offers a place for fresh perspective, personal renewal, and community building.

What about Childcare?

There will be childcare for our nursery-aged children all day.  Older children will be involved in the process at various stages, but there will be age-appropriate children’s activities during times where the children will not be participating.  These activities will likely take place outside and/or offsite.  So, please plan to dress your children for some active play time!

What if people show up to the Summit location that day?

We will have a desk worker scheduled on that Sunday morning to welcome anyone who comes to the church.  They will have maps to the retreat location in case anyone forgets where to go.

We look forward to retreating with you!   Questions?  Call the church @ 291-3324
