Join Us For Freedom School Sunday! (7/14)

Hello Freedom Schools Supporters and Friends,

It has been an amazing summer at the University District CDF Freedom Schools Program.  Hard to believe we are nearing the end of Week 4!
I wanted to share with you some brief updates about the great things that have been happening and extend an invitation to you to join us this Sunday for our Freedom School Sunday Celebration.

After the dust settled the first week, we were able to enroll 107 scholars in grades K-12. More than 65% of these children live or go to school in the University District community.  Even in the first week, I could tell how two years of experience and incredibly well trained staff were resulting in more organized, disciplined, and engaging classrooms.  Things were running smoothly on day one!

We are blessed this year to have a literacy instructor from Columbus City Schools onsite with us four days a week.  He has been working with our K-2 classrooms, ensuring that our teachers have all the things they need to be successful and that our scholars have some helpful data and assessment around their achievement and reading levels.

One of the biggest changes we've made is the hiring of a Nutrition Director, Jena Shellhammer.  A recent OSU Graduate, she has been preparing healthy meals for our scholars onsite with rave reviews!  It has transformed the culture around food at our site, and integrated with a focus on nutrition in our afternoon programming, is making an impact on how our scholars understand the call to healthy living.

We have much to celebrate!  Our Scholars are learning and engaging and being challenged every day to make a difference in their communities.

This Sunday, July 14thwe will gather for our annual Freedom School Sunday at 10:30am.
On this special Sunday, the entire service is devoted to sharing the spirit of Freedom School.  We talk about the movement from which it came, connecting it to the work we are called to be doing today.  The kids will be singing, sharing some of the work they did this week around gun violence, and the staff will be sharing some of their perspectives and experiences.  It will be an inspiring Sunday and one that will give you an opportunity to see firsthand the impact of the work we are doing here in this program.

For those of you who have been big supporters in the past, or for those who'd love to learn more – it's a great week to be here.

We'll follow the worship gathering with lunch!

Thanks again for your incredible support!  We hope to see many of you on Sunday!
