Campus Ministry

Originally, Summit on 16th was The Ohio State University Wesley Foundation, catering mainly to the needs of students. Today, Summit is a congregational church that continues to care deeply about the spiritual needs of students in the OSU area.

OSU Student Group "Summit Students"

Our student group meets regularly to plan new events, and to participate in fellowship, service, study, discipleship, and worship.

Social Events

At least once a quarter we get together to have fun and remember that God calls us to be in Spirit with one another. Our activities are as diverse as seeing the Symphony and going to a Crew game.

Service Projects

At least once per quarter we help to provide mercy for a charity or cause, such as helping the new Ronald McDonald House get ready for opening, or practicing stewardship by gardening at Franklin Park Conservatory, or giving blood, etc.

Bible Study and Spiritual Development

We like to keep Bible study interesting and relevant, focusing on current issues in our lives and in the world. For instance, we will watch an episode of “The West Wing”, identify the major issues, read the relevant scripture from all sides of the argument, and then discuss the application of those scriptures in our lives or in the world. Every quarter we take a poll of what topics you are interested in and when we should meet. Every Fall we have a Spiritual Development and Christian Leadership mini-retreat and we are always looking for new ways to reflect on God’s plan for us and for the world.

Mission Trips

Because we believe strongly in social justice, we feel that being part of the Body of Christ means understanding other cultures through experience and mission. Love in service is a core foundation of Summit on 16th, so as a student group, we try to take a mission trip each year, offering students an alternative Spring Break. In 2008, we traveled to the Dominican Republic and Haïti through a program called International Child Care (www.intlchildcare.org) where we worked with community health programs that focus on children. Sophomore Adrienne Strong said this of her experience: "It was an eye-opening experience that has inspired us all to make changes in our lives and return to the island to help again, in the future." This trip combined students from Summit on 16th and Global Health Initiative. In the past, Summit Students have participate din learning trips to Washington, D.C., as well as mission projects in some of the more impoverished areas of the United States.

Jericho Road Breakfast

Twice a quarter on the first Friday of the month, Summit on 16th, in collaboration with OSU Late Night/Moonlight Madness and the ATO Service Fraternity, serves breakfast to hundreds of students as a deterrent to drinking, violence and assault. "Church Breakfast," as it's often called, celebrated it's 10th year during the 2007-2008 school year and has served over 50,000 students. For more information about upcoming Jericho Road Breakfasts, email the campus minister at campus@summitumc.org.
